The iconic Big Thunder Mountain roller coaster will be temporarily closed for a major renovation starting 6 January 2025. The attraction is expected to reopen to the public in early summer 2025.
The teams at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris and Design & Delivery have been working for over a year on preparations for this major maintenance project, in collaboration with the Maintenance and Central Workshop teams. This renovation is necessary to keep the attraction, which is open all year round, in top condition and to guarantee the quality of the experience, while respecting the original creative vision and rich history closely linked to Frontierland®.
Extensive work on the wood
A key focus of the renovation is preserving the authentic Wild West atmosphere of Frontierland®. The Imagineers have conducted an in-depth study of the extensive woodwork in the attraction and station. Certain structures will be replaced with custom-made, more durable elements, manufactured by the Design & Delivery and Central Workshop teams. These new parts will be carefully painted to preserve the aged look of the gold mine. Iconic elements of the mountain, such as the famous Mill Camp tower and the queue area, will also be refurbished.
Animals and plants restored to their former glory
All figures in the attraction, such as Billy the goat and the mules, are being fully restored to their original glory in the Central Workshops. The vegetation is also being revamped, with cacti being replanted to complete the authentic landscape of the North American deserts. The teams at Walt Disney Imagineering Paris were able to draw on the Big Thunder Mountain archives dating back to its opening in 1992 to ensure the utmost care for these essential elements of the attraction's history.
During the closure, the teams will work hard to ensure that Big Thunder Mountain is accessible again from the start of the summer season, with optimal conditions for both guests and Cast Members.
